Visual Information Processing Evaluation

Last updated as of February 17, 2021

What is Visual Information Processing?

When most people think of vision they think of 20/20 but vision is much more than that. Vision involves how well you see, how well your eyes function (eye tracking, binocular vision, focusing, etc) and visual processing (how your brain understands what you see). When your child has difficulty making sense of what your eyes see it is called a Visual Processing Disorder.

Who should have a Visual Processing/Perceptual Assessment?

A standard eye exam usually focuses on vision and health of the eye. They do not detect a problem with visual skills (focusing, tracking, eye-hand coordination, eye teaming, etc) or visual information processing.

If your child has any any signs or symptoms below they may have a visual information processing disorder:

  • Difficulties at school?
  • Loss of attention?
  • Problems visualizing concepts?
  • Poor handwriting/writing up/down a hill?
  • Loses place/skips words when reading?
  • Reversals of letters/numbers (such as b and d, p and q, 9 and 6)?
  • Blurry vision?
  • Headaches/Eye Strain?
  • Problems reading/avoidance of near work?
  • Poor Reading Comprehension?
  • Turning/Tilting head when reading

How do you do the evaluation?

The visit will consist of a 2 hour visit (that will be broken over two visits) with our developmental optometrist Dr. Shinger to evaluate the vision, visual skills and to do the visual information processing/perceptual testing. After the evaluation, you will have a consultation with our behavioural optometrist where you will receive an in depth report that discusses your child's visual issues and suggestions may be given for accommodations/IEP. Contact our Stoney Creek location to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jasjeet Shinger for your child today. You can also contact Perception Eyecare at (289) 309-1090 or to schedule a binocular vision evaluation.
