The Benefits of Lutein and Zeaxanthin

With life, always being so fast paced, it can be difficult to get in a good source of nutrients through healthy foods. But among many nutrients, these two are very important for your eye health and a MUST for trying to incorporate into your diet.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in the central part of the retina, the macula. The macula is where our finest, central vision comes from, and so a very important part of our eye. The pigments help to absorb blue and UV light, which protects the macula from being damaged.1

Our bodies are unable to make these two pigments so we must get them from our diet. Lutein can be found in leafy green vegetables and egg yolks. Zeaxanthin can be found in orange peppers. A cooking tip: Adding oil to foods high in lutein, will increase its absorption.1

A high dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin can be protective against macular degeneration and cataracts. It can also help maintain healthy skin and protect against cardiovascular disease.1

Our Binbrook optometrists are able to assess your retina to make sure it is healthy through a comprehensive eye examination. Book your appointment today by calling 289-309-1090
