Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. It is a chronic, progressive eye disease that is characterized by the degeneration of the optic nerve. This damage prevents the brain from receiving the appropriate visual information, resulting in vision loss. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. There is an increased risk for development in those with a strong family history, when you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a history of eye injuries. A comprehensive eye examination is the first step to detecting glaucoma. All patients seen at our office are screened for glaucoma at their annual eye examination.
At Perception Eyecare, our optometrists try their best to accommodate ocular emergencies with same day appointments. If you are experiencing sudden vision loss or pain, flashes or floaters, please call our office immediately and our staff will be able to assist you. If you are unable to reach us, please go to your nearest hospital. Our optometrists are trained and certified to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications for most ocular problems.
Good nutrition is an integral part of maintaining healthy eyes. Our optometrists strive to stay current with the latest evidence-based literature regarding the role of nutrition in eye health. During your comprehensive eye examination, recommendations of certain nutritional supplements will be made to help prevent or slow down the progression of certain diseases. Speak with our optometrists today to see if you would benefit from adding certain supplements to your diet.
If you are diabetic, you are at risk for eye diseases and complications. It is advised that you have a full comprehensive examination, which includes a dilated fundus exam annually with a licensed optometrist.
A dilated fundus examination allows our optometrists to have a detailed view of the back of the eye to ensure there are no leaking of blood vessels, or damage to the retina. Our office is equipped with digital retinal photography which allows us to take a detailed photo of your eye.
Our optometrists provide consultations and referrals for laser vision correction surgeries and procedures. We also work closely with laser centres and ophthalmologists to perform pre and post-operative care. The following checklist is a great start to determine if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery:
